At home with the Bahamou family

Not a big hotel, and not just a bed for the night: Auberge Pied du Siroua is a family home, where you are welcomed as a guest. The house serves its own home cooking, and Houcine arranges your walks and treks with an experienced guide. Here, at the foot of the Siroua massif, life follows the quiet pace of the village.

The pool facing the mountains

After the drive or a day's walking, the pool is waiting for you: a few lengths if you feel energetic, a dip to cool off, or a sun lounger to watch the light change on the mountains. On the other side of the guesthouse, the saffron gardens begin, covered in mauve flowers in autumn.

The Berber restaurant

At the table, Saïd cooks the food of our home for you: vegetable tagine with saffron, couscous, méchoui (roast lamb), Berber bread… Saffron grows just behind the guesthouse, and it flavours many of the dishes. Dinner and breakfast are included in the price of the room.

A stopover in the Anti-Atlas by motorbike or 4x4

Between Ouarzazate and Taroudant, the tracks of the Anti-Atlas and the Siroua are a dream for motorcyclists and 4x4 enthusiasts: high plateaus, canyons, palm groves, ksour (fortified villages) and mountain passes. A little way off the main road, Tagmoute is a peaceful stopover, with dinner in the evening and breakfast before you set off again.

Hiking and trekking in the Siroua massif

The Siroua massif starts right on the doorstep. Depending on what you feel like and how fit you are: a walk of a few hours through the gorges and the saffron fields, a day out to the villages and their collective granaries, or the ascent of Jebel Siroua, which rises above 3,300 m. Houcine arranges the outing with an experienced guide and advises you on the route.

The village of Tagmoute

Tagmoute (also spelt Tagmout) is a Berber village of earthen houses, set beside the river between the High Atlas and the Anti-Atlas. The Siroua massif is much quieter than the neighbouring High Atlas: here, people still live in the old ways, and they are happy to welcome curious visitors.

Hands full of freshly picked mauve saffron flowers, in the saffron country of Taliouine

Taliouine saffron, Morocco's red gold

Taliouine is Morocco's saffron capital. Each mauve flower holds three red stigmas, picked by hand and then dried: it takes around 150,000 flowers to make one kilo of the spice. Here, the saffron gardens begin just behind the guesthouse.

Jebel Siroua, a volcano between two Atlas ranges

South of the Toubkal massif, Jebel Siroua (or Sirwa) forms a bridge between the High Atlas and the Anti-Atlas. It is an ancient volcano, extinct for millions of years and worn down by erosion: walls and pinnacles of black lava rise from its slopes, and its summit tops 3,300 m. On its flanks, the earthen villages still have their igoudars, fortified collective granaries where each family kept its stores safe.
