Upcoming events

No events have been announced for now.

The dates of the saffron festival are often published quite late, and village celebrations are hardly ever announced online. The simplest way: tell Houcine when you are coming, and he will let you know what is happening during your stay.

Local celebrations through the year

Around Taliouine, the calendar of celebrations follows the farming seasons, the moon and the life of the villages all at once. Some dates are known months in advance, others only a few days before. That is why each event has its own page here: its dates appear as soon as they are certain, marked “dates to be confirmed” until then.

Autumn, the saffron season

This is the most eagerly awaited time of year in saffron country. When the purple flowers come up, usually between mid-October and mid-November, families pick them every morning before the sun gets high, then separate the stigmas by hand. The flowering comes earlier or later depending on rain and heat: ask how it is going before you fix your trip. Taliouine also celebrates its spice with the International Saffron Festival, which features a cooperatives fair and talks about saffron growing; its dates change from one year to the next. The plant, the picking and the cooperatives are described on our page about Taliouine saffron.

Moussems and village celebrations

A moussem brings the people of an area together every year around the tomb of a saint, a marabout: prayers, shared meals, a market, music and sometimes a fantasia. In the villages, weddings and family celebrations are also occasions for great festivities. These events are hardly ever announced on the internet, and they remain first and foremost gatherings between neighbours: you do not go in without being invited. If one of them takes place during your stay, Houcine will tell you whether you can attend, and how.

Ahwach, the dance of celebrations

In the Anti-Atlas and around the Siroua, big celebrations are often accompanied by ahwach: lines of dancers and singers answering one another to the beat of the bendir frame drums, sometimes late into the night. The town of Ouarzazate even holds a national festival dedicated to this art. To discover the dance, see our activities around Tagmoute.

The weekly souks

A weekly souk is not a celebration, but it is the best place to get a feel for local life: people come from the neighbouring villages to sell vegetables, spices, carpets or saffron, and to catch up on news. Each small town has its own market day, Monday in Taliouine. Go in the morning, when it is at its liveliest. More ideas for outings: things to do in Taliouine.

Religious and national holidays

The major Muslim festivals, such as Eid al-Fitr at the end of Ramadan or Eid al-Adha, follow the lunar calendar: they come about eleven days earlier each year, and their exact date is only set once the crescent moon has been sighted. They are above all family celebrations, during which some shops and services may close. On 14 January, Morocco also celebrates Id Yennayer, the Amazigh New Year, a public holiday since 2024. National holidays, for their part, fall on the same date every year.

Attending a celebration: our tips

  • Ask before taking a photo of anyone, all the more so during a wedding or a prayer.
  • Dress simply, with shoulders and knees covered: it is a sign of respect that is always appreciated.
  • Keep your plans a little flexible: a celebration that depends on the moon can move by a day.
  • Remember to book your room as soon as the saffron festival dates are announced.

Come during a celebration

Tell Houcine your dates and what you would enjoy: he will let you know which celebrations, souks or harvest are waiting for you, and suggest a room.
