Activities around Tagmoute and Taliouine

In saffron country, everything starts at the guesthouse door: wander through the village, meet its people, take home saffron and local produce, discover ahwach dancing, then set off on the paths of the Siroua. Ask Houcine for advice: he will help you plan your days according to the season and what you would like to do.

Visit the village of Tagmoute

Beyond the landscapes around it, Tagmoute has a fine architectural heritage. Wandering through the lanes that wind between the traditional rammed-earth houses, you will discover the life, past and present, of the Chleuh, the Tashelhit-speaking Berbers who live in the western High Atlas and in the Anti-Atlas.

The village is overlooked by its agadir, the traditional collective granary. It is also home to an old fortified house, the Alberj Ihoukarn kasbah, the marabout (shrine) of Lalla Myriam, and ancient ruins that the villagers sometimes attribute to the Portuguese: ask Houcine to tell you their story.

Meet the villagers

Lively and open, Tagmoute's village association will gladly welcome you, show you around the douar (the village) and tell you about what it has achieved and its plans. Village life is organised around:

  • the men's village assembly;
  • the women's centre and its workshops for traditional rugs and woollen fabrics;
  • the women's cooperative that distils aromatic plants (wormwood, lavender, saffron, thyme and medicinal plants);
  • local crafts: the blacksmith, and the women who weave rugs at home to sell at the souk;
  • the primary school and the women's literacy class;
  • and its guesthouse, where we will be delighted to welcome you.

Ask us for the very detailed leaflet that sums up everything the association has done for the development of the douar.

Buy saffron and local produce

In the village, you can buy surplus local farm produce (honey, olive oil, almonds, saffron, aromatic plants…), as well as items made in the village workshops or by local craftspeople.

Saffron alone is worth the trip: it is the spice that made Taliouine famous, and its flowers grow right up to the door of the guesthouse. To find out more about this precious spice, read our page on Taliouine saffron.

Ahwach, the dance of the Berber villages

Ahwach (also written ahouach or ahwash) is the great collective dance of the Berbers of the Atlas and the Anti-Atlas. The dancers stand shoulder to shoulder and form rows that sway together, to the beat of bendirs, the local frame drums, and of songs that answer one another.

More than a show, it is a shared moment that goes with celebrations and expresses the bonds between everyone taking part. If there is a celebration in the village during your stay, ask Houcine whether you can come along.

Festivals and events around Taliouine

Hikes from the guesthouse

The paths start in the village, and Houcine arranges the outings with an experienced guide. Two ideas for a walk from Tagmoute:

  • The gorges towards Tislit: walk up the gorges and enjoy the cool of the waterfalls.
  • The great cliff, for a day out: follow the foot of the cliff, south-west of the village, then come back across the plateau above it. Golden eagles and many other birds nest in the cliff, and at sunset the valley and the plateaus take on beautiful colours.

To the summit of Jebel Siroua

The great classic of the area: across the high plateaus, through gorges, villages and saffron fields, up to the summit of the Siroua, at over 3,300 m, where the view is magnificent. The start of the ascent is about twenty kilometres from the guesthouse.

Rock pinnacles, palm trees and the river in the Tislit Gorges, near Taliouine

The Tislit Gorges

About thirty kilometres from Taliouine, towards Tazenakht, volcanic pinnacles line the riverbed for 2 km. From Souk Assaïs, a 3 km track leads to a small village overlooking the entrance to the gorges. You walk down into them following the river and the irrigation channels, through peaceful country life, then the pinnacles rise up and the scenery grows wilder and wilder.

The Tizgui granaries

Tizgui is a lovely village clinging to the mountainside, at an altitude of 1,700 m. For centuries, its collective granaries served as a bank: all the community's goods were kept there. With a villager who holds the key, we will go and see the granary perched halfway up the cliff.
